Many of us are familiar with festoon lamps - strings lights used around the holidays. These products illuminate outside venues, like circuses, and also bistro patios and gatherings inside tents. They are low cost, and practical.
Strings lights came to mind as permanent lighting effects for the screened veranda in the house we were remodeling. They would be a good fit with this casual, industrial style residence. String lights are typically not the same thing as low voltage cable light bulbs, which are not suitable for outdoors, and can cost more than ten times as much.
String lights are simple to install: While doing the electrical wiring procedure, three outlets are actually installed high on the wall at intervals across the area. The outlets were attached to a switch, so the light bulbs will be turned on easily. During the finishing stage, common wire was mounted on eye screws in the wall space. At one end, the eye screws were beside the outlets, in order that the light string will be plugged in. Three strands of normal gauge wire were attached to the eye screws and pulled tight across the area.
We first of all tried a package of little miniature lights on one of the wires, but did not like the tangled green electric line that came with lights. It was too obvious. So we took those back and got three cases of medium bulb Christmas lights. These came with more simple electric wire and larger sized bulbs. They were named C-7's. You can get C-9's if you want bigger bulbs. There are many bulb shapes and forms from which to choose, all the way up to common sized bulbs.
Each bulb has a little clip so that it can be hung on the cord. We spaced the lamps out, and then pulled the strand tighter. This brand of light strand can be cut down, so there was no excess by the end. When the strand is trim, you will need some black electrician's tape to be able to seal the end.
When the light strings were turned on we had a pleasant surprise. The lighting effects was beautifully diffused all the way through the room. It was so soft and diffused that it looked like moonlight. Strings of little lights have a distinct ambiance - they remind us of get together and festive times. It was fun to re-interpret this particular familiar lighting fashion for regular use.
